In the spring of 2000, six
Canadian universities formed a consortium called Canadian Virtual
University-Université virtuelle canadienne (CVU-UVC)--Canada's
first national university consortium of accredited online and distance
education providers.
CVU was created to:
- Serve Canadian universities that are committed to the core
principles:
- offering quality online and distance programs
- easing transfer of credit among Canadian universities, achieved
in part through the waiving of certain fees for visiting students
- providing learners with as many options as possible when it
comes to what, where, when, and how to take a complete university-level
program without having to enter a classroom
- collaborating with other members to develop new online and distance
programs
- accepting each other's courses for transfer credit where they
meet program requirements
- Establish a Canadian presence in the growing international market
for distance and online education at the university level.
Canadian Virtual University
is incorporated under the Canada Business Act and operates on a nonprofit
basis.
CVU members are Canadian universities
chartered under provincial legislation, and they all belong to the Association
of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).

- Inclusion on the CVU website and in joint marketing initiatives,
resulting in increased national and international visibility for your
programs, courses, and university
- Advantages for your students:
- greater course selection to complete their program with you
- cost savings when they take courses from partner universities.
Students who are admitted at one CVU university do not pay admission
fees when they take courses at other CVU universities.
- Opportunities to shape the future of this new entity through your
participation on the Advisory Committee and on the Board of Directors
- Opportunities to collaborate with other universities to create new
distance programs to reach new markets
- Sharing of expertise within a national community committed to quality
and access in online and distance learning
- Create and offer new distance programs by using distance courses
from the CVU catalogue.

CVU invites any member of AUCC that offers complete programs online or through
distance education and that is committed to CVU's core
principles to join us.
You may use courses from the
CVU catalogue to offer your own program completely through distance
education. For more information on using CVU courses to offer your own
program, please call (780) 421-2540.
