Extended Education at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Distance and Online Education. The successful candidate will also serve a 5-year term (subject to review and renewal) as Director of Distance and Online Education. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This appointment will commence on July 1, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The University of Manitoba’s Distance and Online Education is an expanding area: in winter 2011, 20% of all University of Manitoba undergraduate learners took at least one course through Distance and Online Education. The unit delivers over 250 course sections to over 7,000 students annually, meeting a critical need for degree access and flexibility. The Distance and Online Education unit has an academic staff complement of six instructional designers, and over 10 support and technical staff in instructional technology, course production and delivery, and student services.
The ideal candidate to lead this unit will be a creative, strategic thinker and innovative team player, with the knowledge, skills, energy and experience to further develop this successful program in a rapidly-growing environment.
Leadership and management responsibilities of the director position include planning and operations, development and delivery of programs and student supports, program evaluation and quality assurance, staffing and staff development; budget preparation and management; development and maintenance of positive internal and external relationships; promotion and marketing; leadership of and participation in projects that fit with Extended Education’s and the University of Manitoba’s Strategic Priorities; and representation of Distance and Online Education at university, provincial and national levels.
Candidates must have extensive knowledge of distance, online and blended course delivery methods including instructional design and learning management systems, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated abilities in academic leadership and administration. Candidates must have earned a doctorate in a related field, posses proven skills and success in the development, leadership and management of distance and online programs at the post-secondary level, and be active in research and scholarship in the field. As an Assistant/Associate professor, the successful candidate will be responsible for a sustained research agenda in the field.
